Applications of the TANDAR accelerator to BNCT

Description

In the frame of AB-BNCT (Accelerator-Based Boron Neutron Capture Therapy), the applications of the 20 MV tandem accelerator TANDAR at CNEA has been studied. Detection of low 10B concentrations in biological samples was tested using PIGE (Particle Induced Gamma Emission). Calibration curves and a detection limit of 10 ppm were determined. On the other hand, the 7Li(p,n)7Be nuclear reaction as a neutron source for BNCT was investigated. Irradiations with a 2 MeV proton beam on a thick LiF target were attempted. The neutron production was observed by means of the detection of the 0.478 MeV and 2.22 MeV gamma ray from the neutron capture in boron and hydrogen, respectively. The gamma spectrum was simulated using the Monte Carlo code MCNP (Monte Carlo Neutron and Photon). (author)
