Comparison of the diffusion behaviours of Na and Fe in oxide and nitrogen glasses as measured by radiotracer technique

  • 1. Central Glass and Ceramic Research Inst., Calcutta (India)

Description

Diffusion coefficient of Na and Fe in a glass-pair in the system SiO2-Y2O3-Al2O3 having the constant atom ratio Al:Y:Si as 1:1.36:2.32 but one containing 8.09 at% N were determined by the radiotracer-sectioning technique. Both the values of DNa and DFe were always greater in the pure oxide glass than in the nitrogen containing glass. The values of the other diffusion parameters do not follow any general trend. A switch over in the mechanism from interstitial to vacancy occurs for the diffusion of iron in the nitrogen glass. Moessbauer spectrum of the oxynitride glass containing iron shows the presence of Fe3+ in tetrahedral symmetry. (author). 8 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab
