Description

In 1984, Electricite de France (EDF) decided to equip the new 1400 MW(e) N4 series of PWR plants with a fully computerized control room. The first unit is scheduled to be put into service in 1992, at the Chooz B1 unit. Before on-site construction, it was found necessary to evaluate the new control room using an integral representation simulator, the S3C. A first series of evaluation tests was conducted in 1987 to assess the basic features, to demonstrate the progress in quality of operation, and to identify necessary adaptations. The paper describes the results of the second series of tests performed in 1989, especially in the field of 'on CRT' (computerized) procedures which were integrated for operation into every situation. Next EDF decided to develop a complete set of procedures for the N4 series. After modifications resulting from the tests, the integrated procedures were found useful in normal situations, and very efficient for accident management thanks to the generalized physical state oriented approach.
