Analysis of flow instability in steam turbine control valves

Description

With the sponsorship of Electricite de France and the French steam turbine manufacturers, the Gas Turbine Laboratory of CETIM has started a research about the unsteady phenomena of flow in control valves of steam turbines. The existence of unsteady embossment in the valve cone at rise has been as certained, and a conventional computing procedure has been applied to locate the shock waves in the valve. These shock waves may suddenly arise at some valve lifts and give way to fluttering. Valve geometries attenuating instability of flow and increasing therefore the reliability of such equipment are proposed

Abstract (French)

Le laboratoire de la Turbine a Gaz du CETIM a engage, avec le soutien d'Electricite de France et des constructeurs de turbomachines a vapeur, une etude sur les phenomenes instationnaires prenant naissance dans les soupapes de regulation des turbines a vapeur. Apres avoir constate la presence de bourrelets instationnaires d'efforts sur le clapet lors de la levee de la soupape, une methode de calcul classique a ete mise en oeuvre pour deceler la position des ondes de choc de recompression sur le clapet. Ces chocs peuvent apparaitre brusquement sur le clapet pour certaines levees et battre. Des geometries diminuant notablement les instabilites d'ecoulement dans ces materiels, sont proposees
