Vertical stripes stabilized by the Peierls coupling

Description

We investigate the properties and stability of the filled vertical and diagonal stripes in the single-band Hubbard model with static Peierls electron-lattice coupling for two representative doping levels (x=1/8 and x=1/6), by solving finite clusters within a Hartree-Fock approximation. It has been found that the electron-phonon interaction stabilizes the vertical stripe phases by bond deformations, especially pronounced in bonds which join domain wall atoms with their neighbors in the transverse direction; such deformations strongly increase the kinetic energy gains in these bonds
