Description

The paper discusses some aspects concerning the use of 131I whole body scintigraphy (131I WBS)for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). Only two thirds metastases from DTC accumulate iodine. The administrated dose influences the sensitivity of 131IWBS, particularly with patients with elevated serum thyroglobulin and or known metastases. Despite the high specificity of 131IWBS, several pitfalls of iodine accumulation in non-malignant diseases and malignancies of other origin than thyroid cancer should be taken into account
