Prostate tissue density

Description

This paper reports on the basis for variability in prostate tumor detection with MR imaging. MR imaging at 1.5 T was performed with a body coil in 18 prostate cancer patients prior to radical prostatectomy and serial whole-mount sectioning of the gland. For each MR lesion, the corresponding region on the matching whole-mount section was identified grossly. The tissue densities of these regions and of adjacent, control regions were measured with a densitometer. Areas of tumor involvement were then identified at microscopy. In 24/25 MR lesion, the corresponding pathologic region showed higher tissue density that the control region (P < .0001)
