Description

Chemical and mineral composition of archaeological slags found was studied from two streets in historical center of Opava (U Posty; Kolarska/Pekarka. Different types of slags were studied by polarizing microscope in transmitted and reflected light. Consequently, selected phases were analysed by WDX and EDX. Major components are represented by these oxides: 31.40-64.63 wt. % SiO2, 0.27-23.59 wt. % FeO, 6.90-18.84 wt. % Al2O3, 1.91-15.25 wt. % CaO and 2.93-9.44 wt. % K2O; and major phases are glass, olivine, wuestite and rarely cassiterite and anglesite. Other minerals that occur in slags are pieces of iron or cooper, limonite, malachite, azurite and vivianite. (authors)
