Full text: Thiosulfonates are organic derivatives of thiosulfate (S2O32-), whereby one of the oxygen atoms is replaced by an organic group, to give RS2O2- (where R = Me, MePh and Ph). These compounds are expected to readily undergo oxidation by radiolytically generated hydroxyl radicals to the corresponding thiosulfonate radical, in an analogous way to thiosulfate itself. In the case of thiosulfate, a number of absorbing radiolysis products are formed, assigned as HOS2O3.2-, S4O63.- and S2O3.- by previous workers. The thiosulfonates, however, exhibited significantly different behaviour in that only one transient radical species was formed which decayed to a stable absorbing product. The decay behaviour (single or double exponential) and the spectrum of the radical (λmax and εmax) both depended on the R group
