Degree of acceptance of nuclear energy in the old and the new Laender: The resulte of a current opinion poll

Representative public opinion polls in West and East Germany show that the controversy on nuclear power has indeed subsided to some extent. At the present, nuclear energy is not a topic of great public controversy. But this has not just been the case since the reunification, but rather began with the decision to give up the reprocessing plant in Wackersdorf. Yet there has been no radical change of opinion either. In West Germany the majority of the people still have a very negative opinion of nuclear energy. The hard cord of persons against nuclear energy who staunchly reject this form of energy comprises 21% of the population. In East Germany public opinion is more in favour of nuclear energy; the population is more open to the idea of using nuclear energy than is the population in the old Laender. In East Germany 41% of the population is principally in favour of using nuclear energy and 36% more or less reject it, whereby 13% reject it absolutely. (orig./HSCH)

Repraesentative Bevoelkerungsumfragen in West- und Ostdeutschland zeigen, dass sich die Kontroverse um die Kernergie entspannt hat. Die Kernenergie ist zur Zeit nicht Gegenstand einer heftigen oeffentlichen Kontroverse. Dies ist jedoch nicht erst seit der deutschen Einheit der Fall, sondern begann mit der Entscheidung, die Wiederaufbereitungsanlage in Wackersdorf aufzugeben. Von einem grundlegenden Stimmungsumschwung kann allerdings keine Rede sein. Nach wie vor ueberwiegen in Westdeutschland die emotionalen Ressentiments gegenueber der Unterstuetzung fuer die Kernenergie bei weitem. Der harte Kern der Kernkraftgegner, die diese Energie rigoros ablehnen, umfasst stabil 21 Prozent der Bevoelkerung. In Ostdeutschland ist das Meinungsbild guenstiger, die Bevoelkerung fuer die Nutzung der Kernenergie aufgeschlossener als in den alten Bundeslaendern. In Ostdeutschland stehen 41 Prozent der Nutzung der Kernenergie grundsaetzlich positiv gegebenueber, 36 Prozent mehr oder weniger ablehnend, davon 13 Prozent mit kompromissloser Ablehnung.
