Glycolytic changes in x-irradiated rats

  • 1. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay (India). Biochemistry and Food Technology Div.

Description

Whole-body exposure of rat to lethal dose (800 rad) of X-irradiation alters the relationship between oxidized and reduced metabolites of NAD+-linked lactate dehydrogenase, namely, lactate and pyruvate in the tissues. This, in turn, affects the redox state of NAD+. Endogenous oxygen consumption in liver decreases significantly in X-irradiated rat liver after 5 days; addition of pyruvate does not show any effect on oxygen uptake. A reduction in the activity of liver glutamine-keto acid aminotransferase EC (2.6.1.15) activity further indicates impairment in pyruvate metabolism due to radiation treatment. (author)
