Development of high loading fuel at BATAN

  • 1. Nuclear Fuel Element Centre, National Atomic Energy Agency, Serpong (Indonesia)

Description

BATAN continues the experimental fabrication and testing of uranium silicide (U3Si2-Al) fuel with an emphasis to achieve capability to produce high-load up to 5.2 gU/cm3 with a good production reliability. The latest activities include optimization of U3Si2 fuel preparation, fuel plate preparation and quality tests for immediate irradiation test programme in the RSG-GAS core followed by the post irradiation examinations. It can be reported that by slight modification of production parameters the high-load fuel plates of 5.2 gU/cm3 meeting a quality requirements have been prepared without any production problems. These plates have very good quality showing no blisters, white points and serious dogboning problems. The sectional views of fuel plates reveal that fuel areal distribution and fuel to matrix ratio at high loading remains excellent, indicating a possible additional loading. (author)
