H-/D- ion sources for neutral beam injection in large tokamaks
- 1. Euratom-UKAEA Fusion Association, Abingdon (UK). Culham Lab.
Description
Current drive and heating by use of neutral D0 beams in large tokamaks such as NET or ITER require beam energies of the order 1 MeV to achieve adequate penetration. The electrical efficiency of the injector can be high (∼0.5) if the primary beam is formed from D- ions. A multiple source injector design based on the use of D- ion beams is described, together with extraction experiments on a large area D- source suitable for a prototype injector.
