Risk of cancer and leukemia from diagnostic x-rays in New Zealand

  • 1. National Radiation Lab., Christchurch (New Zealand)

Description

Recently published data from a study of doses to patients undergoing diagnostic X-ray examinations in New Zealand have been used to estimate risks of fatal cancer and leukemia from diagnostic radiology in New Zealand. Attributable risks of all cancers combined leukemia are about 1% and 4.5% respectively. While relatively small contributions, these values do reinforce current international trends towards the adoption of dose constraints for patients in diagnostic radiology. 13 refs., 8 tabs
