NRPB response to Chernobyl

Description
NRPB's first indication that an accidental release had occurred, somewhere in the Soviet Union, came on Monday 28 April 1986 from the Swedish authorities who detected increased levels of radioactivity. The first involvement of Board staff was on Tuesday 29 April, when the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) asked for instruments to be sent to Eastern European UK embassies the next day. A programme of measurements was established for monitoring external radiation levels in Eastern Europe, and for the analysis of water and foodstuff samples collected by the embassies and returned to NRPB for analysis. This led to a constant flow of advice from the FCO to UK embassies which continued into June
