Recurrent pneumonias following intrauterine irradiation of the thymus

Description
A 9 year old girl is described who was born without thyroid function as a result of maternal 131I treatment during early pregnancy. The patient had 15 pneumonias since her second year of life. Immunological investigations showed normal humoral immunity and a normal in vitro responsiveness of circulating lymphocytes. The patient was, however, anergic to 5 skintest antigens and exhibited a primary vaccination reaction after a smallpox revaccination. The findings suggest that intrauterine irradiation primarily affected memory-lymphocytes. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Ein neunjaehriges Maedchen wird beschrieben, das als Folge einer 131Jod-Behandlung seiner Mutter waehrend der Fruehschwangerschaft athyreot geboren wurde. Die Patientin hatte seit dem 2. Lebensjahr 15 Pneumonien. Immunologische Untersuchungen ergaben normale humorale Reaktionen und eine normale Stimulierbarkeit von Blutlymphozyten in vitro. Die Patientin war jedoch anergisch gegen 5 Hautantigene und reagierte auf eine Wiederimpfung gegen Pocken mit der Bildung einer Primaerpapel. Die Befunde weisen auf die Moeglichkeit hin, dass die intrauterin erfolgte Bestrahlung in einer bevorzugten Schaedigung von Memory-Lymphozyten resultierte. (orig.)Additional details
