Binary pulsar with a very small mass function

Description
The authors report the radio pulsar PSR1831-00 to be a member of a binary system. This investigation forms part of a larger research programme involving pulse-arrival-time observations of approx. 70 pulsars. The observations revealed that the pulsar moves in an orbit with a period of 1.81 days, has a small eccentricity, and an unusually small mass function of 0.00012 Msolar mass. Also PSR1831-00, like other known binary pulsars, has a relatively weak magnetic field. Possible models for its formation are outlined. (U.K.)
