Turbulence effect on the growth of solid particles in contracting interstellar clouds

Description

The conditions for the growth of solid particles in contracting interstellar clouds at the presence of turbulent gas motions were investigated. Data on homogeneous and isotropic turbulence, as well as of the Larson model of a contracting cloud were used in calculations. The relations are derived which determine changes in size and velocity of a solid particle in a turbulent gas. Consideration is given to the processes which can limit the growth of a solid particle, viz. particle disintegration by cosmic rays, by fast ions and at particle collision in a turbulent gas. The results obtained suggest a possible rapid growth of the particle size up to 1 cm, which results in strict differentiation of solid particles in size
