Problems of identification of recoil particles in the S143 experiment

Description

The experiment performed in the South Hall at CERN by the collaboration Clermont-Ferrand, Lyon, Uppsala, Varsovie is briefly described. The aim of this experiment is to show the isobaric states which could preexist in the nucleus by using 5GeV pions on helium 4. One shows how to identify the recoiling nuclei by using only the recoiling apparatus. The recoil spectrometer has two arms placed symmetrically around the target; each arm consists of four planes of multiwire proportional chambers, two planes of 8 semiconductor detectors and two plastic scintillators (20mm and 8mm thickness). A forward spectrometer is also used, the components of which are a CERN standard bending magnet, two blocks of MWPC in front of this magnet and two blocks behind it
