Determination of radon and its decay products in living rooms by a track detector technique

Solid state track detectors containing two cellulose nitrate foils type LR-115 were applied for the simultaneous detection of radon and alpha particles. Theoretical aspects of the evaluation are discussed. Track densities in 88 flats of two Hungarian settlements were determined between 1980 and 1982 by 5-month exposures. The effect of the construction materials, the existence of cellars, the variations of the seasons on the track densities were studied. A correlation between alpha activities and gamma doses measured by TLD could be established. Additional alpha exposures due to thoron and its decay products could be estimated.
