Work in controlled thermonuclear fusion research performed in the fusion research unit under the contract association between Euratom and Risoe National Laboratory. Annual progress report 1992

Description

The activities in the Research Unit in 1992 have covered 2 main lines: A) Work in plasma physics and continuum physics which includes: 1. Nonlinear dynamics of plasmas and other continuum systems. the emphasis of the investigations has been on studies of coherent structures in two-dimensional flows. The nonlinear dynamical evolution of these structures, which can be characterised as localised and long-lived vortices, was studied by a combination of theoretical, numerical, and experimental investigations. In order to obtain detailed verification of the numerical algorithms, a small fluid experiment has been constructed. This experiment consists of a rotating water tank, in which the flow is very nearly two-dimensional. 2. Fusion plasma physics. 3. Pellet-plasma interactions. This study aims at assessing possibilities of refuelling a fusion reactor by shooting deuterium-tritium pellets into the plasma and is divided into: (a) A detailed study of the interaction between charged particles of various energies and solidified gases. (b) Pellet handling, acceleration and injection. 4. Participation in the scientific work at JET comprises studies of ELMs (edge localized modes) in the scrape of layer (SOL) and of diagnosing the ion velocity distribution function by means of μ-wave scattering. B) Work in the field of fusion technology which includes studies of neutron irradiation, effects on tensile properties and fatigue in MO-alloys (Subtask PDS 1.2), of Helium and displaced atoms on mechanical properties, microstructure and swelling of Cu and Cu-alloys (Subtask PDS 1.6), and of computer simulation of water radiolysis in NET/ITER in-vessel components (Subtask NWC 1-1). Lists of the personnel involved in the work and lists of publications and educational activities are included. (EG) (21 refs.)
