Energy in Croatia 2007, Annual Energy Report
Description
With a great deal of pleasure we present the sixteenth edition of the review Energy in Croatia. With this Review the Ministry of Economy, Labor and Entrepreneurship continues the practice of informing domestic and foreign public on relations and trends within the Croatian energy sector. This Review gives data and characteristic values relevant to the Croatian energy sector, providing an overview on energy production and consumption at all levels. There is a detailed analysis of the trends present in the energy sector as well as a number of information on capacities, reserves, prices and energy balances for crude oil, all petroleum products, natural gas, electricity, heat energy, coal and renewable energy sources. The Review also brings the main economic and financial indicators, data on air pollutant emissions and main energy efficiency indicators. It also gives the ODEX energy efficiency index, which is determined according to the methodology used in the European Union. This indicator monitors the energy efficiency trends over a period of time in the sectors of industry, transport, households and in total consumption. Finally, the Review brings the energy balances of the Republic of Croatia for the years 2006 and 2007, made following the EUROSTAT and IEA methodologies. Total annual energy consumption in Croatia in 2007 increased by 1.5 percent from the previous year. At the same time gross domestic product increased by 5.6 percent, which resulted in a continuing energy intensity reduction, by 3.8 percent. In relation the European Union (EU 27), energy intensity in Croatia was 16.5 percent above the European average. In 2007 the Croatian production of primary energy decreased by 6.4 percent. The production decrease was recorded in most of primary energy forms. The only energy forms with growing production in 2007 were natural gas production and energy from renewable sources. Due to unfavorable hydrology in 2007, hydro power utilization decreased by 27.4 percent. Also, production of fuel wood decreased by 12 percent while production of crude oil decreased by 4.2 percent. The production of natural gas was increased by 6.2 percent. Because of decreased primary energy production and increased total energy consumption, the own supply of energy was 7.8 percent lower in 2007 than the year before and its level was 46.9 percent. In other words, import dependence in 2006 is increased from 49,4 percent at 53,2 percent in 2007. In the structure of total energy supply energy transmission losses were decreased by 1.9 percent, while the consumption of energy for all other purposes had an upward trend. The sector own energy use grew by 13 percent, while non-energy use increased by 8.6 percent. The energy transport and distribution losses were increased by 1.6 percent. The lowest increase was realized in final energy demand, by 0.4 percent. In the final energy demand - industry and transport - the energy consumption rose by 1.3 percent and 7.2 percent respectively. Final energy demand in the other sectors decreased by 4.6 percent, primarily due to very favorable climate conditions. In 2007 the share of renewable energy sources in total energy supply was about 13.5 percent (based on the EIHP methodology), or 7.6 percent, if calculated by the EUROSTAT method. Total electricity production in the Republic of Croatia in 2007 was 12 245.1 GWh. Out of this amount about 36.3 percent was produced from the renewable energy sources, where large hydro power plants made for 35.3 percent while 1 percent of total electricity generation came from other renewable sources (small hydro power plants, wind energy, landfill gas).
