Present status of super-conducting accelerators for rare ion beam activity at VECC

Description

An ISOL (Isotope Separator On-line) type Rare Ion Beam (RIB) Facility has been developed in Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC). The RIBs will be produced using primary ion beams from cyclotron, transported to an ion source, ionised and the RIB of interest will be selected using an Isotope Separator. For nuclear physics experiments using RIBs, one requires to accelerate the RIBs using post-accelerators. IN VECC, a Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) and five Linear accelerators will be used to accelerate the RIBs up to about 1 keV/u. Further acceleration of the RIBs will be done using Superconducting Quarter Wave Resonators (SCQWRs). The test results of the SCQWRs will be presented in this paper. RIBs offer interesting research opportunities. Highly exotic RIBs can be produced using photofission route of producing RIBs. VECC is developing a 50 MeV/ 2 mA Superconducting electron-LINAC (SC-eLINAC) consisting of five numbers of nine cell elliptical cavities operating at 1.3 GHz and at 2 K temperature. The first nine cell cavity has already been tested. The present status of this activity will also be discussed. (author)
