Particulate materials PM2,5, PM10 and nanometrics, originated in the emissions of a diesel engine

Description

Particulate materials PM10, PM2,5 and nanoparticles emitted by diesel engines have been increasingly cause for hardening of environmental legislation in large metropolis around the world. The EURO 6 standard in Europe and PROCONVE P7 in Brazil regulate the emissions of such PMs, causing damage to human health, compromising human respiratory and circulatory systems. This work investigated the particulate matter emitted by a diesel cycle engine, working with two types of biodiesel: B6 and B6 added in the laboratory. A dynamometer bed coupled to a diesel engine was used and the particulate material was collected using an method in process of patenting that consisting of a capsule coupled to the exhaust duct with a particulate retainer. The collections were done every 20 hours within a total of 140 operating hours for each fuel. Subsequently, a morphological analysis of the particles was performed. For this purpose, SEM analysis and chemical microanalysis by x-ray dispersive energy (EDS) spectroscopy of the collected material identified the morphology and chemical nature of the PM, which is discussed, including rods, spheroidal particles and lamellae. From the emitted particulate material, it was possible to identify different mechanisms and wear regimes in the engine. For the added B6, the particle size was larger as well as showed signs of more severe wear
