A comparison of different procedures for determination of iron in solid solution in aluminium

Description
Four different aluminium alloys in different conditions have been analysed for dissolved iron content using (i) wet chemical analysis by butanol dissolution/atomic absorption, (ii) thermo-electric power measurements, and (iii) Moessbauer spectroscopy. Methods (i) and (ii) agree well with each other and confirm other results obtained from electrical resistivity. Moessbauer spectroscopy tends to give somewhat higher values for dissolved iron at these low values which are close to its limit of detectability. Increasing contents of silicon reduce the solid solubility of iron in aluminium and cause the second phase constitution to change from Al13Fe4to α-AlFeSi. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Fuer vier verschiedene Aluminiumlegierungen in unterschiedlichen Zustaenden wurde der geloeste Eisengehalt bestimmt durch 1. nasschemische Analyse in Butanolloesung/Atomabsorption, 2. Messungen der Thermokraft und 3. Moessbauer-Spektroskopie. Die Ergebnisse nach 1 und 2 stimmen untereinander ueberein und bestaetigen andere Ergebnisse aus elektrischen Widerstandsmessungen. Die Moessbauer-Spektroskopie ergibt hoehere Werte fuer das geloeste Eisen bei diesen niederen Werten, die nahe an ihrer Aufloesungsgrenze liegen. Zunehmender Siliciumgehalt verringert die feste Loeslichkeit von Eisen in Aluminium und fuehrt zu einer Aenderung der Sekundaerphase von Al13Fe4 zu α-AlFeSi. (orig.)Additional details
