Description

A T(d,n)He neutron generator is described producing almost monoenergetic neutrons with an energy of approximately 14 MeV. The most important parameter of the neutron generator is the neutron yield proportional to the energy of impinging deuterons and to the tritium concentration in the target. The neutron yield rises up to deuteron energy of 200 to 300 keV. By accelerating a 1 μA deuteron beam, a yield of (1-3)x108 n/sec is obtained. The design of the tritium target and of closed accelerator systems filled with a deuterium-tritium mixture (the so-called neutron tubes) are described. The possibility is given of the use of fast neutrons in the therapy of malignant tumours, and of obtaining a neutron yield in the order of 1012 to 1013 n/sec using generators with rotary disc-shaped targets.
