Radiological protection in mining and processing of contaminated ores

  • 1. Centro de Desenvolvimento da Tecnologia Nuclear (CDTN), Belo Horizonte, MG (Brazil)

Description

The processing of ores contaminated by radionuclides from the uranium and thorium families can produce unexpected radiation protection problems. This paper presents results of a general radiological survey in a Brazilian ore processing company. It was found that external radiation is not a problem, but air contamination can be of significance. Proper design of the facilities, together with good housekeeping and dust abatement practices, are important to keep safe working conditions in this kind of facility. (author) 2 refs, 2 figs, 6 tabs
