Specifics of electron-vibrational interaction in glasses compared to crystals

Description

Electron-vibrational (EV) spectra are studied for a large number of glass-like systems activated by Eu3+ ions belonging to different classes of inorganic glasses. They include silicate, phosphate, germanate, borate, tellurite, fluoroberyllate, sulfate, nitrate, chloride glasses. It is found that vibron spectra of trivalent europium ions in glasses of different classes are much less intensive than those in different crystals, in crystals of the same or close compositions as well. This result is interpreted as the proof of the earlier made hypothesis on the principally weaker electron-vibrational interaction in glass-like state as compared with crystal state. To substantiate this hypothesis theoretically the physical model tackling electron n-vibrational system as a group of interacting oscillators : electron oscillator presenting a rare earth ion and the totality of vibrational oscillators presenting structural matrix elements, is used
