Chemoradiotherapy for small cell lung cancer

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical result of chemoradiotherapy for small cell lung cancer. Between 1992 and 2002, 129 patients were treated with chemoradiotherapy at Kyoto University Hospital. The limited disease (LD) was 66 cases, and the extended disease (ED) was 63 patients. The irradiated dose was 50-60 Gy per 1.8-2 Gy. In cases with ED, chest only was 13 cases, metastases only 21 cases, and both was 21 cases. The one, 2 and 5 year survival rates of LD cases were 79.0%, 39.9%, 28.5%, respectively, and median survival time (MST) was 18.0 months. The one and two year survival rates of ED cases were 42.7% and 22.6%, respectively, and MST was 10.5 month. The complications larger than grade 2 were observed in 20/129 cases. To improve local control and avoid distant metastases, further therapeutic strategies are needed. (author)
