Description

Thermal Ecology has been gaining importance in recent years in view of the stipulation issued by statutory bodies for permissible rise in temperature in the water bodies into which heated effluents from condensers are discharged. The situation in thermal power plants and steps taken by the nuclear power plants to adhere to the stipulations on discharge of heated effluents are part of the symposium. Modelling the thermal plume in water bodies will help in arriving at a site-specific mixing zone. The impact of increase in temperature on the behavioral patterns of water borne organisms from the basis for stipulating the allowable limits for increase in temperature of the water body. Studying the temperature tolerance of organisms at a molecular level gives an insight into the behavioral patterns. Results of such studies are presented which will result in formulating norms for the discharge of heated effluents into water bodies. Papers relevant to INIS are indexed separately
