Preliminary design of integral-plate cruciform control rod for NHR reactor
- 1. Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology, Collaborative Innovation Center of Advanced Nuclear Energy Technology, Tsinghua University, Beijing (China)
Description
Cruciform control rod is a key component of nuclear heating reactor (NHR). Unlike the conventional 'absorber-rod & cladding-sheet' design, Integral-Plate cruciform control rod has two perpendicular absorber plates to form the cross wing. Each plate is made of a stainless steel panel with several hundreds of holes drilled on each flank to contain B4C absorber elements. Longitudinal groove is made at the middle of the plate. Then the two plates can intersect each other. Compared to the 'absorber-rod & cladding-sheet' design, integral-plate cruciform control rod can achieve a reduction of weight and enhancement of mechanical strength, and easier to fabricate which means lower price. Structural features of the new type cruciform control rod are shown in this paper. Comparison of absorber load of the two designs is also discussed. Finite element analysis is done to determine the mechanical behavior of the control rod under a fast drop impact. (author)
