Patient dosimetry during chest radiography

Description

Reasons for the variation in patient doses from chest radiography procedure were investigated by assessing entrance skin doses from kerma-area product measurements. Data were collected from seven x-ray tubes in five hospitals involving 259 adult patients. The third quartile value was 0.81 mGy compared to general reference level of 0.30 mGy. The applied tube potential was main contributor to patient dose variation. If department use at least 90 k Vp, the mean entrance surface dose would be reduced ut to factor six. Modification of departmental procedure is correct approach for dose reduction in diagnostic radiology. (author)

Abstract (Serbian)

Nivoi izlozenosti pacijenta tokom radiografije pluca analizirani su merenjem proizvoda kerme i povrsine (KAP) za ukupno 259 odraslih pacijenata, u pet zdravstvenih ustanova. Koristeci izmerene vrednosti i podatke o radiografskoj tehnici izracunata je doza na povrsini koze pacijenta (ESD) za svakog pacijenta. Srednja vrednost KAP bila je 0.76 (0.22-1.88) Gy·cm2 a srednja vrednost ESD 0,78 (0.23-1.88) mGy. Za referntni nivo odabrana je vrednost treceg kvartila distribucije izmerenih vrednosti, sto iznosi 0.81 mGy. Osnovni uzrok varijacije pacijentnih doza nalazi se u primenjenoj radiografskoj tehnici: visokom naponu, rastojanju fokus-film i koriscenoj kombinaciji film-poja civacka folija. Smanjenje doza moze se postici korekcijom radioloske prakse: povecanjem napona i faktora pojacanja kombinacija film-pojacivacka folija u skladu sa telesnom masom pacijenta. (autor)
