Supporting document: Applicability of the Near-Surface Test Facility program to repository design

Description

This report discusses the relationship and value of the Near-Surface Test Facility (NSTF) Testing program to the process of designing and building a nuclear waste repository. The importance of the program is addressed from the standpoint of knowledge of basalt behavior gained and of time savings accrued from the operation of the test program. The testing which has been done or is presently planned at the NSTF, plus additional testing which should be done in order to proceed with the repository design, is discussed. This report concludes that the NSTF Testing Program has been and can continue to be an invaluable tool in the process of designing and constructing a nuclear waste repository. 10 refs., 30 figs., 12 tabs
