Research and development in nuclear engineering in France

Creators

Description

This article reviews the activities that are led in France in various nuclear fields: nuclear reactors, fuel cycle, nuclear transports and radioactive wastes. A brief account of past activities and their financing allows the comparison with the money invested today by the main players: CEA, CNRS, IRSN, ANDRA, EDF, AREVA. It appears that the global investment for research/development has been about 1 billion euros each year since the fifties, the difference is that now subsidies from the state represents only 39% while it reached the three quarters in the period 1970-1989 and almost 100% during the years 1957-1969. The article ends by highlighting the high degree of cooperation between countries concerning nuclear safety, radioactive wastes and reactor technology. (A.C.)
