Protective effect of vitamin A against Lewis Lung Carcinoma transplanted into mice after whole body irradiation
- 1. Radiation Therapy Dept., Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY
Description
Survival after Whole Body Irradiation (WBI) and percentage of ''takes'' of Lewis Lung Carcinoma transplanted subcutaneously were followed in two groups of mice: one maintained on supplemental Vit. A diet and the other on normal laboratory chow. In each group, one of four subgroups received WBI in doses of 450, 550, 650 and 800 cGy respectively. Vit. A was started 3 days before WBI. Survival time was found to be inversely proportional to the dose of WBI in each subgroup but was prolonged in the Vit. A group. The percentage of tumor ''takes'' correlated directly with the dose of radiation, but was markedly decreased in the Vit. A group. The drop in white blood cell and platelet counts seen after WBI was also found to be of lesser magnitude in the Vit. A group
