Initial test experience with the Texas A and M EBIS

Description

A 20 cm EBIS with an axial field precision sufficient to yield 99.8% transmission of a 1 mm beam through 3 mm drift tubes has been constructed. Operated at 2.4 kV and 0.25 amp a total contained charge of up to 5 x 109 electronic charges or approximately 50% space charge compensation is extracted in approximately 20 μs for containment periods from 1 to 5 ms. Improvement of the trap vacuum and extraction optics is necessary for useful currents of fully-stripped carbon and nitrogen beams. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Es wurde ein 20cm EBIS mit einer Genauigkeit des axialen Feldes konstruiert, die ausreicht, um fuer einen 1mm Strahl eine Transmission durch 3 mm Driftroehren von 99,8% zu gewaehrleisten. Unter 2,4 kV und 0,25 amp wird eine gesamte enthaltene Ladung von bis zu 5 x 109 Elektronenladungen oder ca. 50% Raumladungskompensation in ca. 20 μs extrahiert, wobei die Behaelterperioden zwischen 1 ms und 5 ms liegen. Fuer brauchbare Stroeme von vollstaendig gestrippten Kohlenstoff- und Stickstoff-Strahlen ist eine Verbesserung des Einfangsvakuums und der Extraktionsoptik noetig. (orig.)
