High-purity radiation-stable glasses and bundles made from them

Description

The behavior of large-aperture fiber bundles in a radiation field is discussed as a function of the purity of the core glass and the oxidation-reduction conditions during melting, produced by introducing a number of impurities. It is shown that, even when the impurity concentration is high, it is possible to achieve not only good initial transmittance (∼30% for a length of 2 m), but also high radiation stability (up to 107 rad). 3 refs., 2 figs
