Thermal analysis of U rich U-Ti alloys

  • 1. Radiometallurgy Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

Phase transformation and micro-structural characterization of two U rich alloys have been carried out by using analytical techniques such as XRD, SEM and DTA. U-Ti alloys of composition U-0.9 %Ti and U-6 %Ti were prepared by vacuum arc melting and subsequently water quenching and furnace cooling after solutionising at 950 °C. Detailed investigations had revealed that in water quenched state of U-0.9 %Ti alloy single phase supersaturated α'-U forms in lathe type of morphology and in U-6%Ti γ-U phase forms predominantly having second minor phase as grain boundary allotriomorphs.
