Nova Ophiuchi 1988 - 0.9-1.35 micron spectroscopy 6 months after discovery

Description
Near-IR grating spectrophotometric observations of Nova Ophiuchi 1988 between 0.9 and 1.35 micron on 22.2 September 1988 UT are reported. These are the first IR observations ever made of a slow nova. The spectrum shows a weak continuum, strong Paschen lines, and He I 1.083A. A number of weaker lines primarily due to He I and forbidden Fe II may also be present. The visual extinction, distance, date of maximum brightness, and H/He abundance are calculated. 23 refs
