Experimental proof of inelastic processes in the helium-solid-interface
Description
Monochromatic and tunable phonons (up to 870 GHz) were scattered from surfaces covered with helium films of various thicknesses. A strong phonon loss due to less than three atomic layers was observed which was independent of frequency. A frequency analysis of the scattered phonons showed that there are nonlinear processes in the surface layer. The results suggest a new approach to the understanding of the Kapitzaresistance. (orig.)
