The use of microwave heating in advanced ceramics processing

Description

Experiments carried out at IPEN are presented, involving advanced ceramics microwave processing. Drying, binder removal, calcing and sintering of materials such as oxides and other compounds of aluminium, zirconium, uranium, beryllium and rare earths were developed in laboratory scale, 2,42 GHz. Modifications of the available commercial furnaces are described; they permitted to obtain temperatures higher than 400 C. Temperatures over 800 C were reached in quartz chambers surrounded by vermiculite; 1200 C was attained with the utilization of the commercial refractory 'Fiberfrax'. The microwave furnace was operated inside a gas cooled glove-box, with nitrogen, argon and air as heat treatment atmospheres. At the microwave frequency used the experiments, although in a laboratory scale, indicate that uranium compounds microwave drying has competitive potential in relation to other more usual procedures. It is discussed the possibility of using microwave heating in a near future in Brazil, for advanced and traditional ceramics processing. (author)

Abstract (Portuguese)

Sao apresentados desenvolvimentos experimentais realizados no IPEN, envolvendo processamento de ceramicas avancadas por microondas. Operacoes de secagem, eliminacao de aglomerante, calcinacao e sinterizacao de oxidos e de outros compostos de aluminio, zirconio, uranio, berilio e terras raras foram efetuadas em escala de laboratorio, na frequencia de 2,45 GHz. Sao descritas modificaoces nos fornos comerciais utilizados, visando obter temperaturas superiores a 400 C. Temperaturas maiores que 800 C puderam ser alcancadas em camaras de quartzo envolvidos por vermiculita, atingindo-se 1200 C mediante o emprego do refratario comercial ''Fiberfrax''. Um forno de microondas foi colocado em caixa-de-luvas resfriada por corrente de gas, tendo sido os tratamentos termicos realizados em nitrogenio, argonio e ao ar. Na frequencia das microondas usadas, as experiencias, embora em escala de laboratorio, indicam que a secagem de compostos de uranio tem potencial competitivo com os procedimentos mais usuais. E discutida a possibilidade de utilizacao a curto prazo no pais, do aquecimento por microondas na area de ceramicas avancadas e tradicionais. (autor)
