Description
Recent experience in instrumenting several nuclear physics experiments has demonstrated the feasibility of automating the data-acquisition phases of the experiment. Electronic circuits are employed wherever the rate of data flow would be slowed down by the use of human operations. Information is selected, temporarily stored and then recorded in a form suitable for immediate entry into a computer. Experimenters thus freed from the tedious aspects of data collection can devote their time to studying the results of the experiment. Potentially useful nuclear events are first selected by the fast (10-8 s) logic part of the instrumentation. Circuits performing simple logical functions are packaged in modular form for easy grouping into particular coincidence, gating, and mixing configurations. Circuits with slower response time (10-6 s and greater) are used to perform temporary storage and recording operations. Automatic test routines are used to initially align the equipment as well as provide continuous calibration during the experiments. Some of the high-speed circuits are described as well as the methods used to incorporate them into a large counting system. (author)

Des essais recents portant sur l'instrumentation de plusieurs experiences de physique nucleaire ont montre que l'automatisation des phases de l'acquisition des donnees de l'experience est possible. On emploie des circuits electroniques dans tous les cas ou des operations manuelles auraient pour effet de ralentir le debit des donnees. Les informations sont selectionnees, temporairement mises en memoire et ensuite enregistrees sous une forme qui permet de les introduire directement dans une calculatrice. Les experimentateurs, ainsi liberes de la tache absorbante que constitue le rassemblement des donnees, peuvent consacrer leur temps a l'etude des resultats obtenus. Les evenements nucleaires pouvant presenter un interet sont d'abord selectionnes par le dispositif de traitement logique rapide (10-8 s) de l'appareillage. Les circuits utilises pour les operations logiques simples sont construits sous forme d'unites modulaires de maniere a pouvoir etre facilement groupes en systemes particuliers: coincidence circuit-porte et mixte. Les circuits a reponse lente (10-6 s ou plus) sont utilises pour les operations de mise en memoire temporaire et d'enregistrement. Pour l'alignement initial des circuits et l'etalonnage continu durant les experiences, on fait appel aux methodes de verification automatique courantes. Les auteurs decrivent plusieurs circuits rapides ainsi que les methodes permettant de les incorporer dans des systemes de comptage de grandes dimensions. (author)Abstract (Spanish)
La experiencia reciente en la instrumentacion para diversos experimentos de fisica nuclear demuestra la posibilidad de automatizar las fases de toma de datos. Se utilizan circuitos electronicos en todos los casos en que el ritmo de manipulacion de los datos quedaria disminuido por la intervencion del hombre. Los datos son seleccionados, temporalmente acumulados, y por ultimo, registrados en forma adecuada para suministrarlos inmediatamente a una calculadora. Asi, los experimentadores, liberados de la fatigosa tarea de registrar datos pueden dedicar su tiempo a estudiar los resultados del experimento. Los fenomenos nucleares que pueden ser interesantes son seleccionados primero por la parte logica rapida (10-8 s) del equipo. Los circuitos que realizan funciones logicas sencillas se presentan en unidades de construccion modular para poderlos acoplar facilmente segun diferentes configuraciones de coincidencia, bloqueo y mezcladoras. Los circuitos de menor velocidad de respuesta (10-6 s y mas) se utilizan para operaciones de acumulacion temporal y registro. Para el ajuste inicial del equipo y para su calibracion continua durante los experimentos, se utilizan procedimientos corrientes de comprobacion automatica. Los autores describen algunos de los circuitos de gran velocidad y los metodos aplicados para acoplarlos en un gran dispositivo de contaje. (author)Abstract (Russian)

Tam, gde skorost' potoka dannykh zamedlyalas' by rabotoj s primeneniem chelovecheskogo truda, ispol'zuyutsya ehlektronnye skhemy. Informatsiya vybiraetsya, vremenno khranitsya i zatem registriruetsya v forme, prigodnoj dlya nemedlennogo vvedeniya v vychislitel'noe ustrojstvo. Takim obrazom litsa, proizvodyashchie ehksperimenty izbavlyayutsya ot skuchnoj raboty po sobiraniyu dannykh i mogut posvyatit' svoe vremya izucheniyu rezul'tatov opyta. Mogushchie okazat'sya poleznymi yadernye dannye prezhde vsego vybirayutsya bystroj (10-8 sek) logicheskoj chast'yu priborov. Skhemy, vypolnyayushchie prostye logicheskie funktsii, pomeshcheny v modul'nuyu formu s tsel'yu oblegcheniya ikh gruppirovki v osobye konfiguratsii sovpadeniya, t. e. vremennoj selektsii i smeshivaniya. Skhemy s bolee medlennoj otvetnoj reaktsiej (10-6 sek i bol'she) ispol'zuyutsya dlya vremennogo khraneniya i registratsii operatsij.
