Polarized Stark broadened line shapes in a magnetic field

Description

The formalism of polarized line formation in a magnetized plasma is presented. It requires the computation of generalized line shapes. They are calculated here for the hydrogen Lyman α line. Ion dynamics effects are taken into account with the Model Microfield Method. The effects of the density, temperature, magnetic field value and fine structure are carefully analyzed. We investigate also the validity range of the Simplified Unified Theory, which uses a frequency dependent broadening operator neglecting the fine structure and magnetic field effects
