Computed tomography of gastrointestinal smooth muscle tumors

Computed tomographic (CT) findings of 6 cases of gastrointestinal leiomyosarcoma and leiomyoma are described. The primary tumors showed soft-tissue density masses with well-demarcated margins, central necrotic areas and good contrast enhancement. Air density was observed in 2 cases and calcification in one. The liver metastases had thick rims with contrast enhancement and central necrosis. CT was useful in defining the extra-canalicular growth of the primary tumors and in identifying the liver metastases. (author)
