Crystallization of rare earth germanates in RbOH and CsOH solutions at 280 deg C

Description

Studied has been interaction of germanium dioxide with neodymium and ytterbium oxides in RbOH and CsOH solutions under hydrothermal conditions at 280 deg C. In the Rb2O-Nd2O3-GeO2-H2O system crystallization of four compounds takes place, to three of which, having different infrared spectra but the same chemical formula Nd2O3x2GeO2 and to neodymium hydroxide Nd(OH)3 separate crystallization fields correspond on phase diagram. In the Rb2O-Yb2O3-GeO2-H2O system the only phase with the composition Yb2Ge2O7 is formed. This compound is identified as ytterbium diorthogermanate, which is crystallized in tetragonal crystal system, parameters of the elementary cell are: a=6.72, c=12.2 A. It has been shown that phase formation does not practically depend upon alkali cation, introduced into the system
