Magnet focusing system

Description

A magnet system designed for focusing parallel charged particle beams arranged in one plane is suggested. The system includes a four-pole lense made as two S-shaped magnet cores with interpolar gaps. Exciting coils are arranged in the gaps. An operating channel with a magnetic field of a quadrupole configuration is formed by profiled pole pieces of the coils. To increase the limiting beam current and to expand the system operating capabilities, an additional four-pole lense identical to the first one is introduced. The both lenses are separated in a crosswise direction in relation to the median plane, and S-shaped magnet cores of the both lenses being on one side of the common median plane are joined into two pairs by means of two excitation coils arranged in interpolar gaps of the proper pairs. Increase of the channel number two times permits to increase two times the limiting beam current as well as to let pass different particles sizes are reduced that decreases capital outlays. The exciting coil construction is essentially simplified. Expenditure of high-cost current-conducting and insulating materials are reduced. Energy consumption and the cooling water flow rate are also reduced
