Stability analysis of W VII-X configurations

Description

The properties of the helical advanced stellarator (Helias) as candidate for XVII-X are summarized. A significant magnetic well in the vacuum field along with a strong reduction of the parallel current density allows finite β configurations with (β) ≤ 0.1 at acceptable aspect ratio (≤ 12) and otherwise moderate geometry characterized by half-axis ratios not exceeding 3, and moderate indentation. At these β values, the Shafranov shift and the change in shear are negligible, the change in twist is ≤ (β) and the resistive interchange criterion as the most stringent necessary stability criterion and as conjectured measure of complete MHD stability is satisfied. Only Helias configurations can meet the MHD goal (β) = 0.05
