The application and demonstration of ALARP in a detailed design review for the UK PWR
Description
A comprehensive and systematic review of the UK PWR design has been carried out by design engineers and radiological protection specialists to demonstrate that the design reduces occupational radiation exposure As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP). The review has been carried out for both system and layout aspects of the design using detailed checklists to provide an auditable record of the ALARP review. Extracts from these detailed checklists are given in the paper to illustrate the level of detail at which the reviews are performed. Design changes which have arisen as a result of the ALARP design reviews are exemplified to illustrate the effectiveness of ALARP design reviews of this nature. (Author)
