NUHOMS MP187 cask: Vectra's MPC system for Rancho Seco

The NUHOMS MP 187 cask is being developed for spent fuel from the Rancho Seo Nuclear Power Station which was shut down in 1989. It is a 125t. multi-purpose metal cask. It will be used to transfer canisters containing fuel assemblies on-site from the storage pool to horizontal storage modules and also as a licensed storage and transportation cask. It is the first of its kind in having these three purposes and also in accepting canisters rather than having an internal basket for spent fuel. Once packaged, the fuel assemblies do not require further direct handling. Because of its size and weight, the MP 187 required special impact limiters the effectiveness of which has been demonstrated by testing. (UK)
