The fusion of 2 neutron stars has been detected by Ligo and Virgo

In August 2017 giant laser interferometers Ligo and Virgo detected gravitational waves again. 2 seconds later the Fermi spatial observatory recorded an intense gamma burst and 12 hours later the Swope telescope in Chile announced the presence of a new light spot in the NGC 4993 galaxy. The triangulation method confirmed this spot as the sole source of the gravitational waves and the gamma burst. The analysis of the gravitational waves has shown that they were produced by the merging of 2 neutron stars and not of 2 black holes as observed previously. Among the numerous observatories that studied the radiations released by the light spot for days and weeks afterwards, the American observatory Gemini, the European VLT telescope and the Hubble spatial telescope detected in the infra-red range some hints of lead, gold and platinum production which would be the first observation of the production of heavy elements in the universe.
